Ultra-White Ceramic Made from Nepheline Syenite Has Less Radioactivity

The whiteness of ceramic tilts is subjected to raw material applied. We normally use zirconium silicate as whitening agent. However, some zirconium silicate, being close to the mineral deposit of radioactive elements, is apt to cause issue that radioactivity exceeds standard.

Therefore, technicians in the field of ceramic production have to look for the substitute. Nepheline syenite is a kind of rare aluminosilicate mineral containing sodium and potassium. It, in favor of the production of big size tile, features in low molten temperature and wide firing range. Upon producing ultra-white tiles, proper amount of nepheline syenite can be added to replace partial zirconium silicate so as to control the production of radionuclide. Nepheline syenite does provide assurance for the export business of the ultra-white tiles.

It is reported that ceramic manufacturers usually add zirconium silicate into glaze formula to cover the texture of ceramic body and whiten the glazed surface. However, the chemical valence of zirconium silicate is 4, the same as the uranium (radium element). These two elements react to each other. If the content of uranium around zirconium silicate mining area is too high, the zirconium silicate will take in uranium and produce high radioactivity.

According to some experts, the ceramic manufacturers shall try to use other substitutes for radioactive zirconium material. The nepheline syenite is just the solution. Referring to the test results provided by the Guangdong Technical Supervision Station for Ceramics Quality Supervision & Inspection, internal exposure index IRa=0.16 and external exposure index Ir=0.52.

Mr. Lu Wen Yi, the president of China-Trust Mining told reporter that nepheline syenite not only relieves people’s concern on radioactivity but also profits tile production with lower firing temperature and improved texture of glazed surface. In addition, Al2O3 content of the nepheline syenite is over 26%. Upon polished tile production, adding right quantity of nepheline syenite will enhance the strength of the tiles and therefore minimize the possibility of breakage occurred during firing, polishing and delivering. Also, the sales price of the well-received nepheline syenite is only 1/6 of the zirconium silicate and it will greatly reduce production cost and bring much profit.

The application of nepheline syenite lay the foundation for the development of ultra-white ceramic. It probably becomes a trend in ceramic industry.
